To say that Hytale has undergone a troubled development cycle would be an understatement. It was a project ten years in the making (and a highly anticipated one at that), only for it to be cancelled by publisher Riot in 2025. Thankfully, the developers at Hypixel Studios did not simply give up. Undeterred, they purchased back the rights to Hytale the same year, and have continued to work on the game ever since.
Today, the wait is officially over. Hytale is now available in “early access” on PC, Mac and Linux, with Hypixel Studios expecting big numbers based on pre-orders. It seems they’re counting on at least 1 million players to show up for the launch, which is probably a fair bet considering the game’s announcement trailer has garnered over 60 million views. People are also encouraged to download the client and log in as early as possible to avoid server issues.
Additionally, the studio’s chief Simon Collins-Leflamme says the costs for the next two years are already covered, though he has not given out any sales numbers yet.
So what is Hytale? Well, it’s basically an open-world survival RPG inspired by Minecraft. It can be played alone or with friends on community servers. If you’re familiar with Cube World, I’d say it looks like a mix of that and Minecraft. As someone who doesn’t currently have a PC (should have built one last year), I’m glad there’s Mac support at least.
