Surpassing expectations, the remastered version of Final Fantasy Tactics has now sold more than one million copies since it launched roughly three months ago. I’d say that’s pretty impressive for an old game in the relatively niche SRPG genre.
According to a post on Twitter, the game’s original director Yasumi Matsuno has stated that he underestimated the remaster’s sales numbers by quite a margin. It seems that he (and possibly Square Enix) expected the game to sell between 800,000 and 1 mllion units in the span of three years, not three months.
While I haven’t quite finished the game yet, I’ve greatly enjoyed my time with it so far. It was a strong contender for my 2025 personal GOTY awards, despite being a “just a remaster”.
Here’s to hoping they make more games set in the Ivalice world, be it new tactical games or a successor to Final Fantasy XII. I’d happily take an updated version of Vagrant Story, too.
