The PlayStation Vita never truly dies, they say. This aging handheld has been officially been dead for years now, cruelly abandoned by its maker due to disappointing sales. I think most of us would agree that Sony could have done a much better job supporting the Vita, but at least the community is doing their part in keeping it alive.
Admittedly, I haven’t paid much attention to the homebrew scene in recent times, but last night I saw a Reddit post about Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance being ported to the platform. Being a fan of the game, I figured I’d help spread the word.
The port, which was made by Nevak, is basically a “wrapper” for the Android version of the game, and you’ll still need the game original files (aka own the game) in order to play it on your Vita. The wrapper can be downloaded from GitHub.
Here’s how it works:
The port works by loading the official Android ARMv7 executables in memory, resolving its imports with native functions and patching it in order to properly run. By doing so, it’s basically as if we emulate a minimalist Android environment in which we run natively the executable as is.
According to the porter (is that a term?), it still needs some more optimization work, but the game is technically playable already. I’ll be trying it out myself in the coming week.
Once again, the Vita homebrew community deserves its flowers for keeping this handheld relevant long after official support ended.
